Lighting the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon on the Ben

Lighting Queen’s Platinum Jubilee beacons on all four of the UK’s national summits by veteran’s charity Walking with the Wounded appealed to Club Member Peter Salenieks for its mountaineering significance and once in a lifetime opportunity.

On June 2nd, 2022 Peter made the trip north to Scotland.

Alighting from the Caledonian Sleeper, Peter made his way up steadily Ben Nevis via an outlying top for a peak ticking opportunity not to be missed. Sunshine gave way to rain and hail during the ascent, plus ominous rumbles of thunder. Fortunately, the weather cleared in time for the arrival of the beacon-carrying team shortly after 8:30 p.m., crossing old snow lying on the summit plateau.

Whilst various of our Club members have stood atop the Ben, few will have encountered evening views such as these.

Peter watched as squalls were carried towards the coast with curtains of rain picked out by the late sun, an evening glow towards the islands of the West and the volcanic rock of the old observatory tower bathed fleetingly in a golden light.

A crescent moon shone during the descent to Fort William.
