Weather and Winter Decision-making websites
The first two are particularly handy to consult if you’re thinking of participating in one of our scheduled weekend events.
Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) – Updates are made for all the main mountain areas of the UK, usually mid- to late-afternoon daily for the coming two days, with a further planning outlook.
UK ‘Met Office’ Mountain Forecasts – Includes summit forecasts for all the main summits in an area.
Ground temperature conditions (current) at locations in North Wales and the Lake District.
– Cwm Idwal (Snowdonia)
– Helvellyn & Great End (Lake District)
Lake District Ski Club Webcam (on Raise, next to Helvellyn) – There are plenty of other webcams if you search for them.
Rock climbing websites
Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre, Cardiff – climbing wall
Rock UK Summit Centre, Trelewis – climbing wall
South Wales Climbing – the definitive source of rock climbing information for Gower and Southeast Wales. Often provides the information you need to find the venues for our scheduled Wednesday climbing events.
Local gear shops
Some of the following offer discount to Club and/or to BMC members. Gwent MC doesn’t endorse particular outlet(s) but Club members are usually happy to answer questions and provide advice based on their experience.
Cotswold Outdoor, Brecon and Cardiff
Crickhowell Adventure Gear, Crickhowell
Gibb Outdoors, Brecon
GO Outdoors, Cardiff
Snow and Rock, Bristol
Up and Under, Cardiff
Trekitt, Hereford
Elite Mountain Supplies, online – This is just one example of many specialist online suppliers that can be found by searching, or ask other Club members for their advice.
Mountain centres of the UK (e.g., Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, Ambleside, Keswick, Fort William) have multiple gear shops, usually with a wider range of gear than outlets local to South Wales.
