The annual GMC photo competition is a highlight of our Winter indoor programme. Despite 2020/21 being a difficult year, and the added challenge of a significant change in the competition categories this year, entries excelled. Albeit with photos having mainly local themes rather than being of far flung mountains, this year’s competition again proved to be entertaining and reflective of the generally high standard of members’ photographs. The winners are as follows:
Category: Taken on or off a Club Meet – Winner Ros Nicholls
Judges Comments: Contre jour photographs can be hard to pull off. This one is technically well executed, avoiding flare and balancing highlights with shadow detail. Portrait format accentuates the action. I wonder how much patience with the self-timer was needed to get the shot that the photographer wanted. It’s got “wow”.
Category: Humour in the Mountains – Winner Jon Singleton
Judges Comments: A simple theme, well executed against a background of lichen-decorated rocks that anchors this image to the category. The expressions of the three subjects are what really makes this work well.
Category: Red in the Mountains – Winner John Jones
Judge’s comments: A patch of red that’s accentuated by wide aperture to blur the background. Muted winter lighting that’s restful. The tracks and a snow clad hillside give a progression into the picture.
Overall Winner – Ros Nicholls
Thank you to all the competitors, winners and judge for a great competition. Don’t forget to start taking your photos for next years competition. The categories are staying the same for 2022.
